GARBA – Introduction for Generation NEXT

Garbo (plural “Garba”): A very simple word, very easily used in Gujarat and Gujaratis around the world but in last 2 decades Garba is becoming a globalized concept. “Garbo” has changed its form and its shape while it started spreading its popularity far and wide.

Garbo was a simple ritual when it started. Garbo really means a pot of clay with holes carved out on it, in decorative fashion.  The “DIVO” lit up inside “Garbo” spreads dangling light.  In modern world, one may interpret this as an early form of dance light or disco ball.  But this clay pot may really mean that worshipping “MAA” in these nine days may lead us to self-realization and the knowledge of the pure “ATMAN” represented by “DIVO”.

In early days or “PRAACHIN” days, little girls used to carefully carry Garbo with lighted divo on their head and go around the neighborhood with their friends and sing devotional songs of “MAA”. There was no dancing or going around the circle involved.  However at some point in time the tradition of Krishna “RAAS” (dancing in circle) merged with Garba and became a new trend.  As Garbo evolved as a folk dance tradition, the devotional form of the lyrics also started changing. Garba started adopting “SHERI-GARBA” format along with Raas.  The newer lyrics represented social trends and social conditions of female talking about “SAHEBO”, “SASU”, “JETHANI” etc.  Even with this changing tradition, Garbo remained a strong reason for religious and social gathering.

India had several social and religious invasions in last 1500 years.  These frequent invasions have very strongly contributed towards preserving our social and religious traditions as the Hindus became more protective towards them.  Since last 65 years, India has started exporting the millennia old culture to entire world through globalization, technology and human exchanges. “Garbo” is one socio-religious tradition which is easy and fun to adopt for the global audience.  Garba and Garba dance patterns are being enjoyed equally by Indians in India, outside India and even non-Indians.  Garba has probably passed the test of “survival of the fittest” and will continue to grow globally. The newer garbas may be a blend of sheri garba, raas, Bollywood and newly created light hearted lyrics.  But the soul of Garba remains Gujju and will continue to go places :)))
